Services > Civil litigation

If you wish to bring or defend any cases other than criminal matters brought by people or public bodies then you may need legal advice and assistance. It can be difficult and cause stress and you may need to know what it will cost and whether Legal Aid is available or not. Sometimes you may have legal expense insurance on your household policy which may pay the costs.

Civil litigation includes a large area ranging from small claims in the County Court to large claims based on personal injury or contract. Small claims do not normally allow solicitors to recover costs against the lose of the case but larger actions can be costly and recovery of costs normally follows the results.

We can advise you on personal injury, damage to property cases, claims between neighbours and building disputes. We will:-

  1. Give you our advice as to success and the costs involved
  2. Approach the other side to see if there is a chance to settle or take the proceedings on your behalf in the County Court or High Court

Please remember that Legal Aid is not available for money claims.

At BRR, we pride ourselves on making our legal resources in dispute resolution available as much to individuals as to corporate clients. We can advise on a diverse range of disputes, including:

  • Consumer protection
  • Professional negligence
  • Regulation
  • Contentious trusts and probate
  • Landlord and tenant
  • Land law issues
  • Personal injury

to name but a few.

We hope to be able to advise you before a dispute arises whenever possible. Sometimes clients will find themselves unavoidably in conflict situations, and then we are happy to act on their behalf. We appreciate the need to advise you expertly, and to make sure that you are kept fully informed.

Litigation is still the most common means of settling civil disputes. Our practice takes full benefit of the recent reforms in the civil justice system and we welcome the increasing opportunities presented by alternative dispute resolutions, such as mediation and arbitration. Though not appropriate for every case, they may offer speedier and cheaper means of resolving disputes and, particularly between family members, can offer the prospect of rebuilding strained relationships. We work with trained mediators, arbitrators and adjudicators.
